Athletic department has banner year
April 20, 2012
To whom it may concern: space needs to be made in Sisam Arena for more banners.
Grand View University established itself as the top team in the Midwest Collegiate Conference throughout the 2011-2012 school year. In the fall, each team, men and women’s soccer, football and women’s volleyball won the regular season conference championship. The men’s soccer team and women’s volleyball team won the conference tournament, the football team won the automatic bid to the national tournament and the women’s soccer team was clearly the best team all season but fell short in the conference championship game.

The winter sports didn’t disappoint, with the men’s basketball team catching fire at the end of the season and making it to the conference championship game, coming up just short of a historic run. Our women’s basketball team steam rolled through the regular season, winning the regular season title and dominating the conference tournament, advancing to the Elite 8 of the National Tournament.
Our wrestling squad is really good, winning first in the National Duals, first in the Central National Qualifier and first in the NAIA National Championships. The men were named National Champions and finished with the No. 1 ranking in the country.
Our men and women’s indoor track teams have made a habit of winning the indoor conference championships, with the men winning their second consecutive title and the women winning a remarkable fourth straight conference title.
The men beat the second place team by 33 points, and the women outscored their second place team by 21 points.
The dance team qualified for Nationals for the fourth straight year and finished in second over the weekend. We take for granted what we see at halftime of football and basketball games. Our dance team is one of the best in the entire country.
Our cheerleaders finished in third at regionals in only their first full year of competition.
And the spring sports have yet to finish their seasons, but as of today, the baseball and softball team each sit in second place in the conference, the men’s golf team won the conference last year and are on pace to do it again this year, the women’s golf team has won their last three tournaments and the golf championships get under way on April 20. Go to thegrandviews.com for updates on their results.
In their first season of competition, both the men and women’s tennis teams have made dramatic improvements since they first started practice in the fall.
It is safe to say, this was a banner year for Grand View University Athletics.
